Widow of Malcolm-Jamal Warner Says She Had ‘No Choice’ but to Sue His Mom for $1.2M: ‘Struggling to Care for Our Daughter’

Malcom-Jamal Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, spoke out after taking legal action regarding his trust and alleged unpaid debts

Malcolm died at age 54 in an accidental drowning in July 2025

Tenisha says in a statement that she “attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate and honor his last wishes”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow, Tenisha Warner, is speaking out about the legal battle against the actor’s mom, Pamela Warner, involving the late actor’s estate.

On Tuesday, June 21, after news of her legal actions in California’s Superior Court, Tenisha said in a statement shared PEOPLE, “For the last year, I have attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate and honor his last wishes.”

“Malcolm had every intention to provide for our 9-year-old daughter and me,” Tenisha said. “He was close to finalizing a new estate plan to replace the stale plan created in 1996 when he was 26 years old, 20 years before we met and well before we gave birth to our beautiful daughter.”

She added that Malcolm was ultimately “unable to do so before we lost him.”

“I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider,” Tenisha continued. “Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights before any potential statute of limitations expired. We thank you for your support, love and understanding as we work through this painful process while honoring Malcolm’s life on the first anniversary of his death.”

Malcolm, who appeared as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992, died in an accidental drowning at age 54 while on a family vacation in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025.

The Atlanta Journal ConstitutionandTMZfirst reported on Tenisha’s lawsuit in Georgia’s DeKalb County Superior Court on Tuesday. In that filing, Tenisha claimed she and the late actor signed a premarital agreement in May 2022 and that he agreed to a $1 million life insurance policy with her as sole beneficiary, though he allegedly failed to secure the policy, per the AJC.

Pamela serves as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust, which the actor set up in 1996. Tenisha reportedly requested that the alleged debt is covered by the trust since she believes Malcolm’s estate “will be inadequate to satisfy” the costs, according to the outlet.

In Los Angeles court documents obtained by PEOPLE on Tuesday, Tenisha alleges she is owed $1,276,042.46, which included the $1 million in life-insurance obligations, in addition to various other alleged debts.

PEOPLE has also reached out to lawyers for Pamela for comment.

Malcolm’s mom, Pamela shared a tribute to her son on the first anniversary of his death on Monday.

“Today has come so very quickly. It is amazing how a year of pain, hurt, loss, emotional de-stabilizaton, and most importantly growth, has come and sits here before me,” Pamela wrote in a tribute shared on her son’s legacy Instagram account. “It has been a whirlwind of experiences, insights, discoveries and the realization that life can bring to your door-step the unimaginable.”

Elsewhere in the post, she added that in the year since her son’s death, “I have discovered how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be. I have also discovered the depth of love, care, concern and support that humans are capable of. All of which I have been the recipient of. The good, the bad and the ugly. These are the lessons that apparently I will need as I continue my journey.”

She concluded her message by asking readers to “please take care of yourselves and those who you love.”

“Let them know that they are loved. Clear up any beef you may have with your loved ones, if possible. Cleanse your spirt of negativity,” Pamela wrote. “We all have an expiration date. Don’t leave or let your loved one leave without them knowing that they are loved and treasured. That knowledge and ‘clean plate’ has helped me to survive.”

In September, Malcolm’s widow shared a photo from their wedding and thanked her followers for “holding us in so much love during this tender time.” At the time, she launched the Warner Family Foundation and River & Ember, alongside their daughter.
