Below was filmed across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, in 2025

The Netflix miniseries centers around the town of Snooks Arm, which was primarily shot in Brigus South

Set designers and cast members thanked the communities at the filming locations for hosting their shoot

Although Below offers no shortage of haunting scenes, they take place in scenic locations.

The Netflix limited series, which was released on Oct. 8, takes place in the mysterious small town of Snooks Arm, Newfoundland, Canada, as its residents are terrorized by a giant creature in its harbor. Josh Hartnett leads the series as Calvin Penney, a fisherman who becomes determined to not let the monster hurt his friends and family — including his son, Wade (Charlie Heaton).

As the miniseries revolves around beautiful natural elements and a large body of water, the show picked several areas in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, to film in the late summer and fall of 2025.

“They’re really good storytellers and they’re really open and very trusting,” Heaton told The Hollywood Reporter of the communities they worked with in Newfoundland and Labrador. “I heard somewhere that the niceness of Canadians was born in Newfoundland ... That really to me set the tone for that kind of warmth you get in the beginning of the show.”

The actor continued, “Newfoundland culture is so rich and even though [creator] Jesse [McKeown’s] script is sci-fi, but it’s all kind of embedded in folklore. It’s a love letter to everything he’d kind of witnessed while he was there in their culture and he pulled it out.”

Here’s everything to know about where Below was filmed.

While Snooks Arm is a real “designated place” in Newfoundland, the show was primarily filmed in Brigus South, a small fishing community on the southern shore of the Avalon Peninsula.

The tight-knit community — which consists of less than 100 people — was transformed into the town in Below.

Longtime resident Lillian Carey told CBC News that production made various changes and set design additions to the town. She and others also noted they allowed the designers to modify their homes for aesthetic purposes.

“For one thing, the church was gone out of here and they built a new church ... the same as the old one, but an older version of it,” she said, while adding that another home was redesigned to look like a fishing shed “just like years ago.”

Resident Elizabeth Power told the outlet that she let the show paint her home blue to look more distressed, while fellow resident Alexis Rice said the production team was “very respectful.”

Below also ventured to the historic coastal town of Pouch Cove, which is located around 60 miles north of Brigus South on the northeast Avalon Peninsula.

Pouch Cove served as the location and backdrop for a fish farm and the community hall in Below.

The Netflix show utilized the fishing community for its “dramatic cliffs, ocean views and wild coastal landscapes,” as well as its “easy access to the East Coast Trail, where waterfalls, rocky headlands and crashing waves showcase the raw beauty of the Avalon Peninsula,” per the streamer.

St. John’s

While several of the Below filming locations were in small communities, the miniseries also shot some scenes in Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital, St. John’s.

In addition to many of the downtown background scenes being shot in St. John’s, the marine research facility in Below was set up in St. John’s Ocean Sciences Centre.

“Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich history and stunning landscapes make it the ideal canvas for a project of this magnitude,” Dr. Andrew Furey, the former 14th Premier of Newfoundland, told Tudum. “The province’s commitment to storytelling, talented crews, and unique beauty ensure that this series will capture the spirit of our province. We are excited to be part of bringing this incredible vision to the screen.”

While many buildings were adapted for Below, the popular Linda’s Bar was shot in a real bar located in Harbour Main, a small community along the west side shores of Conception Bay.

The real-life bar is named Town of Old, and some of the cast members visited the spot prior to filming. Heaton described the bar to THR as “timeless” and confirmed the real person who helms the bar was similar to Mary Walsh’s character, Linda Best.

The small fishing town of Bay Bulls, which is located along Newfoundland and Labrador’s rugged and coastal Irish Loop, served as a backdrop for some of the “key expeditions” in Below, per Netflix.

Bay Bulls is situated with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and cliffs on the other, so it has become known for whale watching and ocean views.

Perhaps one of the most notable monuments in Below is the “Mudder,” which is a large piece of floating ice near Snooks Arm that houses the creature terrifying the town.

In real life, where Calvin goes to harvest icebergs to sell them is located on the Twillingate Islands in Notre Dame Bay. Twillingate is known as the “Iceberg Capital of the World” for its notable position in relation to Greenland and the Canadian Arctic that allowed for the formation of several icebergs that lie on “Iceberg Alley.”
