ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Chandler Simpson’s misplay in Game 2 almost cost the Tampa Bay Rays a run. Monday night, the speedster saved one.

In the top of the second inning, Sal Frelick lined a ball to the short fence in the left-field corner at Tropicana Field. Simpson sprinted over at full speed, glanced quickly at the wall, and then went all in and grabbed the ball at the wall. He collided hard with the wall, but held onto the ball as he fell backwards. Simpson struggled to get up, but threw in the ball in quickly to keep the Brewers runner at first base.

It looked like Simpson had injured himself on the play, laying down on the turf for several seconds after the play. He waved off the trainer, however, and remained in the game.

On Saturday night, Simpson and Taylor Walls got crossed up on a Christian Yelich blooper to shallow left that should have been routine. The misplay brought William Contreras to the plate in a tie game, but the Rays got out of the inning with the score still tied.

After, the FOX broadcast showed Rays star Junior Caminero yelling in the dugout. Some assumed he was yelling about that play, but the Rays have since said he was trying to fire up his teammates.
