The Record will nominate several high school athletes in San Joaquin County for the Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Week award.

It’s up to you, the readers, to choose the winner for May 4-9.

The Martin Dentistry Award highlights top performances from 209-area schools — excluding boys baseball, which has its own poll. This week’s ballot features seven nominees from Stockton, Tracy, Ripon and Lathrop.

Anyone can nominate an athlete of the week for every sport. Readers can email nominations to sports reporter Dylan Ackermann at dackermann@gannett.com. Please include the player's stats and, if possible, a photo.

The poll at the bottom of this page closes at noon on Thursday, May 14. There are no voting restrictions, so vote now and vote often.

Here are the May 4-9 nominees (Athletes listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Maci De Costa, Softball, Lathrop

Hitters have struggled to solve Maci De Costa all season.

The Lathrop senior finished the regular season with two more dominant performances in the circle.

She threw her 11th complete game of the year in a 4-3 win over Beyer on May 6, striking out six and allowing no earned runs.

Then, less than 24 hours later, she fired five innings with eight strikeouts and only two hits allowed in an 18-0 win over Grace Davis.

She also added production at the plate, going 1-for-3 against Beyer and 1-for-4 with an RBI against Grace Davis, finishing the regular season with a 3.06 ERA, a county-best 156 strikeouts, a .343 batting average and 15 RBIs.

St. Mary’s Olivia Harris hits a single during a varsity softball game against Lincoln at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton on May 5, 2026. St. Mary’s won 6-4.

Olivia Harris, Softball, St. Mary's

Watching Olivia Harris play, it’s hard to believe she is only a freshman.

The St. Mary’s catcher has handled herself like a veteran throughout the season.

She opened the final week of the regular season with a three-run home run in a 1-for-3 performance during a 6-5 win over Lincoln on May 4. She followed that a day later in another win over Lincoln, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in a 6-4 victory.

She added another hit in the regular-season finale against Lodi, finishing 1-for-3.

Harris closed the regular season batting .333 with 24 RBIs, and the way she frames pitches and controls the game behind the plate continues to show how high her ceiling is for both herself and St. Mary’s.

Octavia Orndoff, Softball, River Island

Pitching to Octavia Orndoff has been a problem all season.

Almost every trip to the plate seems to end with a hit, an RBI or both.

She showed that again in a 20-14 win over Millennium on May 6, going a perfect 6-for-6 with seven RBIs. A week earlier against ALHA, she delivered one of the biggest RBI performances of the season, driving in 13 runs during a 21-0 victory.

She added another strong finish to the year, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in a 13-2 win.

Her final numbers stood out in every way — a .741 batting average with 43 hits and 43 RBIs in 17 games.

Taylor Sansaver, Softball, Tracy

What separates a player headed to a top-25 NCAA softball program?

Taylor Sansaver continues to provide the answer.

The Tracy standout and University of Arizona commit stayed dominant to close the regular season, opening with a 2-for-3 game and three RBIs in a 20-1 win over Merrill West.

Not even 24 hours later, she followed with a 3-for-5 performance and six RBIs in a 14-0 win over Kimball.

She finished the regular season with at least two RBIs in each of her final seven games, ending with 43 RBIs, 54 hits and a .635 batting average while helping power Tracy to a 23-1 record and one of the top teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Clara Schoolland, Girls Track and Field, Ripon

There is not much Clara Schoolland can’t do on a track.

Or in the field.

At the Trans-Valley League Varsity Championships on May 7, the Ripon standout won the 100 meters with a personal-best 12.70 despite it being only her second time running the event this season.

She added a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.23 after dominating the event against TVL opponents all season, winning it in five straight meets. She also helped Ripon place second in the 4x400 relay with a 4:14.00.

Then came the high jump, where she tied a personal best and set a season-best mark by clearing 5-5 to finish first.

Ripon Christian’s Mason Tameling serves the ball during the Sac-Joaquin Section Boys Volleyball Division 3 playoff match against McNair at Ripon Christian High School on Ripon on May 1, 2026. Ripon Christian won 3-0.

Mason Tameling, Boys Volleyball, Ripon Christian

The conversation around Mason Tameling and Ripon Christian volleyball is becoming hard to ignore.

By the time his career is remembered, he may be viewed as the greatest player in program history.

He helped lead Ripon Christian past No. 3 Lathrop in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals on May 6, finishing with nine kills, seven digs and three aces in a 3-0 sweep.

Three days later, in a 3-2 loss to No. 1 Beyer in the section finals, he emptied everything he had into the effort with 21 kills and four digs while chasing a third section title in four seasons.

His career ends with two section championships, 1,377 kills, 296 aces and 713 digs.

Kimball sophomore Briana Quintero delivers a pitch, moments before releasing the ball during a game in the 2026 season.

Briana Quintero, Softball, Kimball

History keeps following Briana Quintero.

The Kimball sophomore delivered another record-setting performance in a 5-2 win over Lodi on May 5.

She fired a complete game with six hits allowed and nine strikeouts, giving her 18 complete games in just 20 starts and breaking a school record that had stood since 2015.

She backed it up at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

A hitless game in the regular-season finale against Tracy did little to change the bigger picture, as she closed the year batting .459 with 24 RBIs, a 2.78 ERA, 16 wins and 140 strikeouts while helping Kimball reach its fifth consecutive CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth, another school record.
