Spoilers for the season eight premiere of Outlander below
Sassenach lovers can rejoice that Outlander has finally returned with new episodes. After more than a year since the cliffhanger that left fans wondering what was going to happen to the Fraser family next, the season eight premiere finally aired on Friday, March 6.
Claire, Jamie, Roger, and Brianna share a dram after being reunited. STARZ
Viewers who have already watched the first episode, āSoul of a Rebel,ā will know that this was a relatively happy one (especially by Outlander standards). The trailers for season eight teased one moment in particular, which turned out to be from the premiere. Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (CaitrĆona Balfe) have just settled back on Fraserās Ridge after being welcomed home by Young Ian (John Bell) and his wife Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small). While Jamie and Claire are embracing, Claireās eyes widen and she says incredulously, āIs it possible?ā While there were many fan theories about this particular momentāeven that it could have been a crossover moment with Outlander: Blood of My Bloodāthe way it played out was much more logical, especially when you look back at the end of season seven.
In a separate timeline, Roger (Richard Rankin) was reunited with Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and the children in 1739 at Lallybroch. They have to make a decision as to āwhenā they will go next: the 1980s or 1778. Itās clear now which one they picked because it is Roger, Brianna, and their two children, Jemmy (Blake Johnston Miller) and Mandy (Rosa Morris) coming up the road. After their emotional reunion, Brianna and Roger give Jamie and Claire several books as gifts. Here is a closer look at each one:
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
First published in 1947, this classic childrenās picture book written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd has been beloved for generations and is a staple for early childhood reading lists. On the show, Roger and Brianna brought it with them as a bedtime book for the children so that their grandfather Jamie could read to them. However, Fanny (Florrie Wilkinson) appears mesmerized by the artwork, which she doesnāt know comes from the 20th century. āItās like a painting,ā she exclaims, to everyone elseās knowing looks.
The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, 13th Edition
This was a gift for Claire. Published in 1977, it was a widely-used medical textbook published by Merck & Co. for physicians and medical trainees, offering clinical guidance on diagnosing and treating a broad range of diseases and conditions. Some examples include respiratory infections, heart ailments, lung disorders, digestive illnesses, hormonal conditions, neurologic problems, joint injuries, mental health concerns, skin diseases, pediatric care, and obstetric medicine. The most recent print version is the 20th edition, released in 2018, with continuous updates online.
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
One of the most famous and influential fictional literary works of all time, itās the perfect gift for Jamie. Tolkien stands as one of the earliest modern authors to construct a fully realized, fictional world. Told across three books (plus one prequel), a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins sets out on a perilous journey to destroy a powerful ring that threatens the fate of Middle-earth. Jamie immediately seems intrigued.
The Soul of a Rebel, The Scottish Roots of the American Revolution by Franklin W. Randall
This one, obviously, isnāt a real book and only exists within the universe of Outlander. But it is critical to the events of the final season. Brianna says that she hasnāt read it yet, but it was the research Frank was conducting before he died, which was shown in season three. After reading through it, Jamie comes to Claire with what heās discovered. āThere will be a battle in about a yearās time at a place called Kingās Mountain,ā Jamie tells Claire, āand that James Fraser dies in it.ā
