Hey, Lorne Michaels! Stephen Colbert wants to make the move from the Ed Sullivan Theater to Studio 8H. **

While visiting *Late Night *on Tuesday, the comedian and author asked host Seth Meyers if he could help him land a new gig at *Saturday Night Live *after *The Late Show* ends on May 21. “Is Lorne here?” Colbert asked. To which Meyers responded, “Lorne Michaels? Why? Do you want to talk to him about something?”**

As it turns out, yes. “Would you tell him I’m available in June?” Colbert quipped as the audience laughed. “I don’t know if he’s still hiring.”

His question immediately piqued Meyers’ interest. “Not to host? You want, like, just work on the show?” the host clarified.**

“I need a show, man,” Colbert said. “Not for the cash! I’m fine for cash. It’s just [my wife] Evie [McGee-Colbert] will want me out of the house.”**

Meyers added that Colbert accepting a small salary would definitely increase his *SNL* chances. “If I can tell Lorne you will work for scale, that will help,” he quipped.

Colbert was also happy to list some of his comedic talents, too. “I do a Bill Clinton impression,” he said. Through his laughter, he added, “That’s the last time — that’s how long ago I auditioned for *SNL*!” **

The *Colbert Report *alum went on to share that he auditioned for the late-night sketch comedy series in 1997 or 1998. “It was so long ago I auditioned for *SNL*, I auditioned with an Al D’Amato impression,” he said, referring to the former New York senator. Turning to the audience, he remarked, “You don’t even remember who Al D’Amato was!” **

Keeping the good energy going, Meyers teased that Colbert’s take on D’Amato was likely “not an impression they needed” in 1998. “Wait, were you on the decision-making team?” the laughing Colbert asked. To which Meyers replied, “No, I wasn’t there yet! I would never have passed.”

Still, Meyers noted, “It would be really funny if Lorne was still kicking himself after letting you go in ’98.”**

“Oh, I’m sure he is,” Colbert agreed. Then, he added, “Again, is he here?”

Meyers admitted that Michaels wasn’t in the studio that evening, but that “he watches every night” before giving a deadpan look to the audience. “This is gonna get back to him,” the host joked. “Someone will tell him! I think someone will tell him!”

Colbert previously pitched himself to host *SNL* when Meyers visited* The Colbert Report* in 2011 by doing an
interesting impersonation of Robert De Niro. At the time, Meyers described Colbert’s impression as “if De Niro had a kid with the Penguin.”

The pair also discussed *SNL* when Meyers stopped by *The Late Show* in November 2024, with Colbert sharing that he had recently rewatched his failed *SNL* audition while filming a segment for the show’s 50th anniversary documentary. **

“They said, ‘We’d like to film you watching your audition,’” Colbert recalled. “When I went to network! Like the final audition. With, like, Lorne, and [Michael] Shoemaker.”**

Colbert noted that he was “terrified” to watch it at the time, but that it wasn't nearly as bad as he'd imagined it to be. “It was okay!” He said. “It was okay. I understand why they gave me a shot. How about that?”**

To which Meyers responded, “Nobody isn’t great that makes it that far.”
