One of late actress Shannen Doherty's first roles was Jenny Wilder during Little House on the Prairie's ninth and final season, which ended in 1983, per IMDb. Six years after the final episode of Little House on the Prairie aired, Doherty starred as Heather Duke in the dark high school comedy, Heathers.
Doherty wasn't the only Little House on the Prairie alum who had a significant role in Heathers. ReMind Magazine reported that Patrick Labyorteaux, who portrayed Little House on the Prairie character, Andrew "Andy" Garvey, put on a Westerburg High School letterman jacket for his role as Ram Sweeney.
According to ReMind Magazine, Labyorteaux shared an amusing on-set memory of Doherty in a May 2024 YouTube video. Labyorteaux explained that he and the other actors who played Westerburg jocks decided to go method while filming "this big, huge sequence in the cafeteria," which took quite a bit of time as it was introducing all of the different high school cliques.
"Me and my other jock buddies were trying to kind of play that āmethod thing,ā where we were trying to be as jerky as we could possibly be, just like the characters,ā said Labyorteaux in the video. "So we were sending these horrible, outrageous notes to other cliques at other tables from the jocks. You know, like: āWe think blah, blah, blah, blah, blahā¦, signed Kurt [played by Lance Fenton] and Ram.ā And they would send them back and we would get a laugh, and everything would be funny."
He then said that the notes were given to the actresses who played Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk), and Doherty. According to Labyorteaux, Doherty, who died in July 2024 after a battle with cancer, decided to write back.
āWell, we sent a bunch of letters to the Heathers, and we thought we were just hysterical. And it was just going to be a big laugh. Well, we got a note back from Shannen Doherty, my alum from Little House on the Prairie,ā recalled Labyorteaux while smiling. āIt was the most disgusting piece of literature I have ever read. She outgrossed us in every single respect. So, I gotta give it to her. She kind of turned the tables on us.ā
Patrick Labyorteaux Discussed the Long-Lasting 'Little House on the Prairie' Fandom
During a February 2024 appearance on the Little House on the Prairie 50th Anniversary Pod, hosted by Pamela Bob and Little House on the Prairie stars Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim, Labyorteaux discussed the show's enduring fanbase. He said that the show's star, Michael Landon, who played Charles "Pa" Ingalls, knew that Little House on the Prairie was going to have long-lasting success. According to Labyorteaux, Landon, who also worked as one of the show's producers, writers, and directors, told him that the series would "still be on TV in 50 years" while they were shooting Little House on the Prairie.
"I couldn't wrap my head around it. I was like 'What are you talking about Michael Landon?'" recalled Labyorteaux.
Labyorteaux then said Landon explained the show, which takes place in the late 1800s, has a sense of timelessness because of its costumes and set design.
"I didn't see how it could stay on TV but he was so right," said Labyorteaux in the 2024 interview.
