Tom Cruise met Princess Diana in 1992 at the London premiere of Far and Away with Nicole Kidman
The Top Gun actor and Prince William bonded over their shared love of aviation and have attended events together over the years
Cruise has also participated in royal celebrations, including King Charles’ Coronation Concert
Tom Cruise has a decades-long history with the royal family.
The Top Gun actor first became acquainted with the royals when he met the late Princess Diana with his then-wife Nicole Kidman at the 1992 premiere of their movie Far and Away. A few years later, Diana brought along her young sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to visit the Mission: Impossible set, according to Vanity Fair.
Over the years, Cruise maintained his relationship with the royals and spent time with the late Prince Philip as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton. Cruise previously explained that he and William bonded over their mutual interests — including aviation.
“We have a lot in common,” Cruise said in 2022, according to My London. “We both love England, and we’re both aviators; we both love flying.”
William and his wife, Kate Middleton, have gone on to attend several of his red carpet premieres, while he’s supported them at various royal events, as well. In September 2026, the Prince and Princess of Wales attended the world premiere of Cruise’s film, Digger, and posed for photos with the star.

Cruise played a role in the Coronation Concert, which took place in the days following King Charles’ crowning ceremony. In a video cameo, Cruise gave the monarch a shout-out while in a fighter jet.
“Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time,” Cruise said.

During his speech at the event, Prince William directly addressed Cruise during the fundraising appeal for new aircraft.
“I should also take this opportunity to give a mention to my — our — fellow pilot, Tom Cruise,” the royal said. “Tom, huge thanks for supporting us tonight. And Tom, if you wouldn’t mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next Mission Impossible, it would be appreciated. We have all seen on our screens that — how can I put it — you seem to have a different take on ‘normal wear and tear’ to the rest of us. It’s not the kind that buffs out.”

William and Kate stepped out for the world premiere of Cruise’s film Digger at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in London on Sept. 22, 2026. The event marked the first time they walked a movie red carpet together since Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick in May 2022.
