The lead role in the upcoming Prime Video series "God of War" will be recast after Ryan Hurst was injured on set, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed to USA TODAY after Deadline first reported the news.
Hurst was hurt in June while performing a stunt during filming of the PlayStation video game adaptation in Vancouver, British Columbia. Production has since paused.
The veteran actor had been cast as Kratos, the Spartan warrior and titular God of War, opposite Callum Vinson as his son, Atreus.
The cast also includes Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
According to the official series description, "God of War" follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus teaches his father how to be a better human.

Kratos is a Spartan warrior and demigod who strikes a bargain to sacrifice his soul in exchange for victory in battle.
Hurst previously voiced Thor in the 2022 video game "God of War Ragnarök."
In January, Hurst celebrated his casting on Instagram, writing, "Used to play as him. Now I get to be him. Grateful to pick up the axe, and honored by the fans who made this story legendary."
The 50-year-old's film credits include "Saving Private Ryan," "Patch Adams," "Remember the Titans," "We Were Soldiers," "The Ladykillers" and "Rango." On television, he portrayed Opie Winston on "Sons of Anarchy" and Beta on "The Walking Dead."
Hurst currently appears in Christopher Nolan's"The Odyssey" as Mentor, an old friend of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, who watches over his son, Telemachus, and defends the household in Ithaca while the hero is away.
