When Robert Downey Jr. appeared at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this week to discuss the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, eagle-eyed fans quickly spotted that his outfit appeared to contain a hidden message.
The 61-year-old actor, who helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his role as Iron Man, will this time be taking on the very different role of villain Doctor Doom. At Comic-Con, he wore a custom jacket embroidered with a series of mysterious runes.
Now, one dedicated fan on Reddit believes they have been able to decipher the coded message.
The user, who posts under the name EditWithEgo, used various other pieces of Avengers: Doomsday marketing in order to deduce that the runes are a “phonetic cipher of English.”
If their theory is correct, the runes over the jacket’s right pocket read “Revenge” while the message over the left pocket reads: “Justice.”

Meanwhile, the runes on the jacket’s lapel spell out: “There is no promise of tomorrow.”
The right cuff reads: “To the victor,” while the left cuff, which is only partially visible in photos, appears to complete the phrase: “Go the spoils.”

“To the victor, go the spoils,” is a popular political saying that dates back to at least the 1800s, and in this case is also a pun: in Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom’s full name is Dr. Victor Werner von Doom.
The runes, which in Marvel lore originate from Latveria, the fictional European country that Doctor Doom rules over, are expected to play a deeper role in Avengers: Doomsday. They also appear on the armour that Doom wears in the film.

Marvel fans got a better look at the forthcoming superhero film when an extended trailer premiered at Comic-Con.
The trailer emphasises Doctor Doom’s relationship with the Fantastic Four, making it clear that Pedro Pascal’s Mr Fantastic and the rest of the group have a troubled pre-existing relationship with the villain.
The footage was shown only to Hall H attendees at Comic-Con and is not yet available online. It follows the release of a first trailer last week, which fans branded “disappointing”.
Fans who have seen both appear to prefer the second, with many questioning why Marvel didn’t lead with it.
“OK, the second Doomsday trailer is so much better than the first,” wrote one person on X, with another echoing the same sentiment: “Why wasn’t this the first Doomsday trailer cause it’s way better than whatever that slop first trailer was.”
The forthcoming film, the first in a two-part Avengers finale, will feature almost every major character from the MCU. It’ll be released on 18 December – the same day as Dune: Part 3.
