Prince Harry is revealing the story behind one of his favorite photos of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — and the special moment he captured himself.

In his new MasterClass about grief, the Duke of Sussex, 42, shares a photo of his two children walking hand-in-hand through a tidal pool, a candid moment that his wife, Meghan Markle, previously posted on Instagram in celebration of Archie’s seventh birthday in May.

“I love this photo. I took this photo,” Harry says. “This was just before Archie’s birthday.”

“The two of them, brother and sister, at peace with each other in nature, fills my heart,” he adds.

The sweet moment between Archie and Lilibet comes as Harry’s own relationship with his older brother, Prince William, remains strained. The brothers have been estranged for years, with no public indication of a reconciliation.

Harry’s comments come in Redefining Grief: Building Resilience Through Loss, a new MasterClass in which he joins neuroscientist Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor to explore grief, resilience and how losing his mother, Princess Diana, at age 12 shaped his life.

While much of the MasterClass focuses on how Harry has navigated the grief of losing his mother as a child, he also opens up about the lessons he’s learned as a father and how he strives to be the best parent he can be.

“Becoming a father is an emotional rollercoaster,” he admits. “I wish I’d known how hard being a father was going to be. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“I’m proud that we’ve got this far. You know, super happy that I’ve got two healthy, beautiful, amusing, very funny kids,” Harry adds.

To balance his work commitments with family life, Harry says he follows a 10-day rule that limits how long he spends away from Meghan and their children.

“The biggest factor for me is the energy and the joy and happiness that I get being with my family, especially our kids, and the joy and happiness I get by being on the ground for my work,” he explains. “And the key to finding the joy and happiness balance is no more than 10 days away from my wife and kids.”

“This is balancing my work and the purpose behind that, as well as being a dad and a husband, and the sort of multi-identity elements coming together,” Harry adds.

For years after his mother’s death, Harry says he kept himself “emotionally numb,” feeling that allowing himself to be happy would somehow be disloyal to her memory.

“I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her,” he shares. “The reality is, what I discovered was actually that she just wanted me to be happy. And that was a huge mental shift for me. It freed me, and it gave me a whole different outlook on life.”

Now, as he raises his own children and pursues charitable causes close to his heart, Harry says he continues to draw inspiration from his mother.

“Everything I do, everything I put my energy towards, I hope that my mother will be proud about it,” he says. “There is an element of carrying my mother in me that ultimately energizes me for the work that I do.”

PEOPLE has learned that MasterClass approached Harry last year about developing a class centered on grief. He filmed the program in California early this summer, though not at his Montecito home.

Released ahead of World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10, the class benefits two bereavement charities, Comfort Zone Camp and Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a longtime cause of Harry’s.
