Peter Byrne, a member of ‘80s new-wave band Naked Eyes and singer of the hits “Always Something There to Remind Me” and “Promises Promises,” died “peacefully” after a brief illness on Sept. 14 in Los Angeles. He was 74.

Naked Eyes announced his death on its website.

Byrne was born in Islington, North London, in June 1952, and later co-founded Naked Eyes alongside Rob Fisher in 1982. The pair were friends from college, and three years before Naked Eyes, they played together with Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal in a band called Neon.

Byrne and Fisher’s debut album, which was released in the U.K. as Burning Bridges and self-titled as Naked Eyes in the U.S., reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200.

The group also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 multiple times with songs from its two albums. Burning Bridges’ “Always Something There to Remind Me” reached No. 8, while “Promises, Promises” reached No. 11. The former was a cover of the 1963 song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick.

The duo’s second and final album, Fuel for the Fire, reached the charts with “When the Lights Go Out” peaking at No. 37 and “(What) In the Name of Love” at No. 39 in 1984.

In 1985, Byrne provided backing vocals on Stevie Wonder’s 1985 hit “Part-Time Lover.” His career continued with songwriting for film and television.

The band later disbanded, and Fisher died in 1999 at age 42. After Fisher’s death, Byrne released several solo albums, including The Real Illusion in 2001, Fumbling with the Covers in 2007, Disguise the Limit in 2021. A remastered version of Burning Bridges was released in 2025.
