House Majority Whip Tom Emmer told a crowd on Friday that he is no longer softening his language on immigration, declaring that immigrants who refuse to assimilate into American society should return to their countries of origin.

Speaking at the Faith and Freedom conference, the high-ranking Minnesota Republican addressed what he described as a hesitation among his constituents to speak out on cultural issues due to a fear of public backlash.

“Sometimes, Minnesotans are so afraid that you’re going to call us a racist, you’re going to call us an Islamophobe, you’re going to call us some name, that we just don’t want to get into that fight,” Emmer said during his speech.

Emmer told the attendees that he is shifting away from that cautious approach when discussing national identity and immigration.

“You know what? I would argue that I never did care, but I am done being careful, even the least bit careful,” Emmer said. “And I don’t really care where you come from. But if you come to this great country, you have to understand you’re coming here to be an American. We celebrate everyone’s culture. We’re happy with that, as long as you are an American.”

During the address, Emmer noted that while he supports the celebration of diverse backgrounds, a lack of integration into American culture is unacceptable to him. He explicitly referenced several heritage groups, including Italian, Polish, and Somali populations, before issuing a direct ultimatum.

“Celebrate your culture. I don’t care. Italian, Polish, Somali, okay? But they don’t assimilate,” Emmer concluded. “And if they don’t assimilate, then they should go the hell back to where they came from.”
