A legendary voice from the ’80s metal scene is opening up about the health issues that forced him to step away from the stage.
During a recent appearance on the Beardo & Weirdo podcast, former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider revealed that doctors delivered a blunt reality check that ultimately led him to back out of the band’s planned 50th-anniversary reunion tour.
Reflecting on the moment he came face-to-face with his limitations, Snider, 70, recalled a conversation with his doctor that left little room for interpretation. “First of all, becoming face-to-face with mortality. And as the doctor said to me, 'Dude, you're great, amazing for a 71-year-old. But you can't do that anymore. You're done. Your body parts are worn out, and you got nothing left.'”
The singer explained that the warning came after years of intense physical performances that took a toll on his body. When a surgeon examined his X-ray, the response was equally direct. “[He said], 'Do you jump around much?' 'Yeah. That's kind of what I do.' He goes, 'Yeah, well, you're done.'”

Snider initially hoped surgery might allow him to continue touring. He underwent a hip replacement and believed the procedure might help him return to performing. But during additional testing, doctors discovered previously undiagnosed heart issues and hypertension, complicating his plans to get back onstage.
The rocker even attempted a brief comeback while guest performing with Lita Ford. But after only a few energetic moments, things quickly went sideways. “Three bounces—knee goes. And I'm, like, 'Whoa. Son of a bitch.' And I'm just hearing that surgeon going, 'You're done. You're done. You're done.'”
Today, the singer says he’s focused on enjoying life with his family at his compound in North Carolina while pursuing other creative outlets, including directing his first film and continuing his long-running syndicated radio show House of Hair.
Despite stepping away from the tour, Snider reassured fans he’s at peace with the decision. As he later shared on social media, he’s simply choosing to preserve the time and energy he has left rather than push himself beyond his limits.
But fans need not worry; Twisted Sister’s anniversary shows will still go on, with former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bachstepping in for several performances this fall.
