The musical legacy Kurt Cobain left behind remains as strong as ever.
The Nirvana frontman died by suicide at his home in Seattle on April 5, 1994. He was 27. Cobain had struggled for years with depression, substance abuse issues and a debilitating, unexplained stomach ailment.
"Kurt had ... inhuman levels of professional pressure, chronic and severe physical pain and a heroin addiction that he just couldn't seem to shake (or didn't want to)," Nirvana biographer and Cobain's friend Michael Azerrad wrote in The New Yorker in September 2021.
Cobain was survived by his wife, Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, and his then-20-month-old daughter Frances Bean Cobain. In the years since the musician's death, they have continued to pay tribute to the late singer.
On what would have been Cobain's 54th birthday in 2023, Love shared a black-and-white photo, taken by Mark Seliger, of her and her late husband, writing, "Happy birthday beautiful boy," along with a quote from the liner notes of Nirvana's 1992 compilation album Incesticide.
On the 32nd anniversary of the rock icon's death, here's a look back at Cobain's final days and his death.

The tragedy came on the heels of an extremely tumultuous month for the singer.
Cobain had been hospitalized while overseas in Rome after ingesting roughly 50 Rohypnol pills and falling into a temporary coma on March 4, 1994.
"There was a definite suicidal urge, to be gobbling and gobbling and gobbling," Love told Rolling Stone of the incident in December 1994.
On March 18, Love called the police on her husband, who had locked himself in a room with a gun and was threatening to die by suicide One week later, Cobain was persuaded to seek help after his loved ones, including Love, staged an intervention.
"I told him, 'You've got to be a good daddy. We've got to be good parents,' " Love told PEOPLE in 1994.
The singer checked into Exodus Recovery Center in Marina del Rey, Calif., at the end of March but left after 36 hours and supposedly retreated to a country house he and Love owned, located about 40 miles east of Seattle. According to Rolling Stone, Cobain called Love on April 1 in what would be their last conversation; she later told a Seattle newspaper that one of the things her husband said during that phone call was, "Just remember, no matter what, I love you."
On April 4, Cobain's mother, Wendy O'Connor, reported her son missing to the police, but they were unable to locate him. Love also hired a private investigator to find her husband.

Nirvana is widely credited with spearheading a cultural shift in music and fashion driven by grunge.
Before Cobain's death, Nirvana sold nearly 10 million copies of its 1991 sophomore album Nevermind, per The New York Times. As the band's main songwriter, Cobain was a huge part of its success, with former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl telling Classic Rock Magazine in January 2021, "The person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us."
Nirvana's popularity only grew after Cobain died. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and NME reported in December 2019 that the trio's single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" had become the second '90s music video to hit 1 billion views on YouTube behind Guns 'N Roses' "November Rain."
Record sales also continued to climb. As of 2024, Nevermind was certified platinum 13 times and had sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, per AXS TV. That year, the album also became the ninth album in history to spend 700 weeks on the Billboard 200. Rolling Stone ranked the album sixth on its "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list in 2023.
In addition to his musical legacy, Cobain was also a father to daughter Frances, who was almost 2 when the singer died. An artist in her own right, Frances has posted snippets of several original songs on her social media accounts over the years, including "Angel," in tribute to Cobain.
In April 2018, when asked what Cobain would think of her foray into songwriting, Frances told E! News that she hoped her dad "would be proud of the human being I am, even if he didn't like the art I am putting out."
In October 2023, Frances married Tony Hawk's oldest son, Riley Hawk. They welcomed their first child together, son Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, in September 2024.
