Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relocation to the UK has put King Charles in an increasingly awkward position as tensions over security arrangements intensify.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have brought their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to Britain, with the young royals set to start at a preparatory school next month.

However, their arrival has sparked renewed debate about what level of protection the family will be granted - and whether the King possesses any authority to assist his son.

Sources tell The Telegraph that Harry's representatives provided the Home Office security committee fewer than two weeks' notification of the family's relocation plans, falling short of the standard 28-day requirement set by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec).

The abbreviated timeframe was apparently linked to fears of premature disclosure, combined with the delayed confirmation of the children's educational placements and Harry's desire to personally inform his father before any public announcement.

The King received official notification on Sunday, August 16, with media outlets subsequently breaking the story on August 19. Harry, Meghan, and their children touched down in the UK last week.

The family is believed to reside at a confidential address, while Harry continues to pursue taxpayer-funded police protection.

He forfeited his automatic right to publicly funded security following his decision to step back as a working royal in 2020 and relocate to the US.

Supporters of Harry have contended that circumstances have shifted significantly now that the Sussexes have returned to live in Britain.

An insider close to the couple stated that Ravec had been "kicking the can down the road for the last seven years".

They added: "We have always adhered to the rules they set, even as the goalposts have moved along the way."

The source maintained that location had previously been a key factor in the decision to scale back Harry's protection, noting: "That barrier has now been removed, and an obvious off-ramp exists for the committee to do the sensible thing: protect the King's son and grandchildren."

The matter has also drawn attention from Neil Basu, a former royal protection officer who once supervised security arrangements for Harry and Meghan.

During an appearance on The Crime Agents podcast, he expressed surprise that Harry had not been provided "the full package", citing dangers from Islamist extremists and the extreme right wing.

He said, "In 2019, he was one of the people we thought needed the full package. In 2026 he doesn't? I have never been able to see why his threat risk has reduced, whether you like him or not."

Mr Basu added: "Having protection is one of the most intrusive things. He only wants it because he's genuinely in fear of his life, and more importantly, his wife and children."

However, the King himself lacks the authority to unilaterally alter his son's security arrangements. One source close to the matter stated: "Obviously, the King is in an impossible position. He cannot intervene, or be seen to apply pressure, in a way that could be construed as constitutionally overstepping."

The source went on to say: "But one would imagine he is as concerned as anyone that his son - and, in particular, his grandchildren - are not receiving any form of police protection despite being fifth, sixth and seventh in line to the throne. The situation is untenable."

Neither the Home Office nor the Cabinet Office were willing to offer comment on the matter, and Buckingham Palace maintained its standard policy of declining to address security-related issues.
