John Oliver - Last Week Tonight YouTube
John Oliver spent a large segment of Sundayâs (August 9) episode of Last Week Tonight on Donald Trumpâs Department of Justice and the âbizarro-world version of civil rights.â
The topic began with interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, and her collapsed case against former Olympian David Hearn. As Oliver noted, Pirro was moved to drop the charges against Hearn, the man federal prosecutors had accused of damaging the National Mallâs recently renovated Reflecting Pool, despite repeatedly claiming âhe damaged the pool.â
âDonât take what Iâm about to say out of context, but we shouldnât always have to believe women,â Oliver joked. âBecause, sometimes, women, like Jeanine Pirro, and many men, can be, and again, donât quote me on this, dumb as f***, wrong as s***, and louder than a drunk parakeet.â
A judge rejected Pirroâs claims, and in a 20-page court filing, wrote, âThe damage was the result of a botched installation and not vandalism.â
Following the judgeâs decision, President Trump said he was âdisappointedâ in Pirro, saying that she âchokedâ and âfolded like an umbrella,â a turn of phrase Oliver found amusing.
âHonestly, in another universe, a much better one, Trump would be a sassy upstairs neighbor in a long-running sitcom,â the comedian said. âSadly, instead, heâs the president and his bitchy quips about being bummed that the U.S. Attorney for D.C. isnât getting the results that he personally wants are signs of a slow-moving constitutional crisis.â
Oliver said there are countless examples of the DOJ âacting at Trumpâs behest,â noting how the presidentâs former personal attorney, Todd Blanche, was recently confirmed as Attorney General.
âIn normal times, the DOJ does some incredibly important work, but sadly, under Donald Trump, while political prosecutions have risen, other genuinely important ones have either been messed up or just tossed aside,â the HBO host continued.

He added, âFor all the headlines about bulls*** cases like the reflecting pool and the âsandwich murdererâ [the man who threw a sandwich at ICE officers], the real decay at the department has unfortunately gotten much less attention. Which isnât good, because after [Pam] Bondi took over, the agency began shutting down more than 23,000 investigations into things like terrorism, white collar crime, drugs, and other offenses.â

Oliver then turned his attention to the new head of the DOJâs Civil Rights Division, Harmeet Dhillon, who recently said that some of the biggest social justice issues facing Americans today are, âThey have to lie every day about pronouns. They have to lie about the person in the cubicle next to them being qualified. They have to laugh at certain kinds of jokes [from] late-night comedians, even when they donât agree with them.â
âMy audience is not pretending to find my jokes funny,â Oliver retorted. âThey are simply laughing out of an abundance of politeness until I get to the sad facts and numbers that we all know they came to see.â
Oliver called Dhillonâs comments âa bizarro-world version of civil rights where the only ones that matter are those of conservatives,â which mostly appears to be multiple investigations into potential voting fraud.
âNotably, their record in those cases is 21 straight losses,â Oliver added.
