The Full House star struggled with addiction and toxic relationships before getting sober in her mid-30s
Jodie Sweetin struggled with how others perceived her after starring on Full House.
Joining Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum for a conversation on his podcast,Inside of You, Sweetin, 44, reflected on how much she worried about what people thought of her once her turn as Stephanie Tanner came to an end in 1995.
In an attempt to show her high school classmates that she didn't think too highly of herself after starring on the hit sitcom, Sweetin went out of her way to act "worse."
āI had this weird, I'll say, I had this, particularly after the show ended, like, in high school, there was this strange feeling that I had, because everyone assumed I was quote unquote a TV star. So, like, you know, the rumor before you would even start at a school was like, āOh, she's a stuck-up bitch,'ā Sweetin said.

āI wanted to prove them wrong," she continued. "So it was like, in order to make myself palatable and make other people feel like I wasn't trying to be better than them, I would try to be worse than them. So like, āI don't think I'm better than you. I'll get more f----d up. I'll do more drugs.' ā
Sweetin, who joined the show at just 5 years old, admitted that she acted this way until she was in her mid-30s, noting that she made āa mess of relationshipsā and got āinvolved with really severely toxic, scary people.ā
āYou keep going, and then that becomes who you are, you know. I spent most of my life through my, probably, mid-30s being like, āDo you love me? Do you love me?' ā Sweetin said.

Sweetin joined theĀ Barely Famous Podcast with Kail Lowry in July 2025 to discuss her sobriety journey, noting that being in the spotlight added an extra layer.
"I always say, I would have struggled with addiction issues regardless of being on TV or not," she told Lowry. "And to be fair, that gave me some of the ability to be able to find treatment and find help in ways that I might not have had I not worked as a child. But it's very hard [when] you have to make all your mistakes publicly.ā

She explained that she went to treatment in her 20s and then "got sober" after having her daughters, Zoie Laurel May Herpin, 18, and Beatrix Carlin Sweetin-Coyle, 15. While she "relapsed" after a car accident in 2011, for which she was prescribed a muscle relaxer, she said on the podcast that "it's been 16 years since I've drank alcohol and 13 years since I relapsed on meds" from the accident.
