Gavin Rossdale is opening up about his co-parenting relationship with ex-wife Gwen Stefani

The Bush singer, 60, spoke with Fox News Digital and discussed how he co-parents with his ex-wife. Rossdale and Stefani, who ended things over 10 years ago, share three sons — Kingston, 19, Zuma, 17, and Apollo, 12.

"It is an interesting kind of [relationship]," said Rossdale. "It's a two-lane highway, you know, but they don't ever seem to merge, which is fine."

However, Rossdale said that he and Stefani are just trying their best to raise their three kids.

"[She's] probably doing the best she can, and I'm doing the best I can," he explained. "And the kids are growing up, so I'm a proud proponent of the system."

Stefani and Rossdale split in 2015. She went on to marry husband Blake Shelton in 2021.

When it comes to how he's raising his kids, Rossdale said he's just trying to make sure he's not raising "jerks."

"Making them likable. I think that if you've got kids that are unlikable, they've got a tough life ahead, you know," he explained. "Life is hard enough without being a jerk, without being kind of aware of other people, mindful of other people, considerate of other people, empathetic."

A rep for Stefani did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Back in 2018, PEOPLE confirmed that Stefani and Rossdale were in mediation over opposing parenting styles.

“They have very different points of view on how to raise their kids,” a source told PEOPLE of the exes at the time. The source added that while Stefani’s religious beliefs are a priority for her, Rossdale “isn’t a Christian and parenting in that way.”

A second insider told PEOPLE Rossdale “loves his kids,” adding: “They’re the world to him. He’s a great father and wants to spend as much time with them as possible.”

The No Doubt singer spoke with PEOPLE in November 2024 about the end of her relationship with Rossdale, admitting that she didn't know "how to protect" her kids in the aftermath of her divorce.

“Something that I wanted since I was a little girl is to be married and have this love that I saw my parents have and have babies. That dream was completely ruined; it was crushed, and I had to figure out how I was going to move forward and make a new dream,” she said at the time. “And God putting Blake in my life was just that miracle.”

"Especially growing up with this perfect example of love between my parents. They met when they were 15, and they fell in love, and then they had us [children], and they made us feel like we were everything to them," Stefani said. "And when you have a family and it's the opposite of that, it breaks up ... I didn't know what to do or how to protect my children. And I'm still working on that."
