Elizabeth Berkley is a bona fide cult classic queen, but it wasn't always that way.
The award-winning actress and "Saved by the Bell" alum, who starred in the controversial 1995 film "Showgirls," got candid on her struggles in Hollywood after appearing in the raunchy Paul Verhoeven drama during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Monday, Nov. 10.
"A lot of things went on that wouldn't be allowed now — someone could not be pummeled to that degree," Berkley, who played Las Vegas stripper-turned-star Nomi Malone, reflected. "I couldn't understand how people could be so cruel, but I'm tough. I had to separate out what they said from what I believed to be true."
Released in September 1995, the film was a critical and commercial failure, earning just $20 million against a $45 million budget and later a measly 24% positive reviews on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The widely panned erotic thriller received a record 13 Razzie Awards nominations and "won" seven, including worst picture, actress (Berkley) and screenplay (Joe Eszterhas).
Over the years, "Showgirls" has gained a cult following, lovingly mocked and parodied at drag shows, midnight movie screenings and in an off-Broadway musical. The film was even screened at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, a facility associated with the Oscars' Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in March 2024.
However, at the time, the film's withering reception proved to be something of a scarlet letter for Berkley's burgeoning movie career.

How Elizabeth Berkley fought to be in 'First Wives Club'
Berkley's first major role after "Showgirls" was a true showbiz struggle.
In her Hollywood Reporter interview, the actress recalled taking interest in auditions for "The First Wives Club," a comedy that would go on to star Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. But Berkley was allegedly barred from going to the film's casting office.
Undeterred, Berkley reached out to then-Paramount chairperson Sherry Lansing and later sent in an audition tape, a bold move that would help her land the role of Phoebe LaVelle.
"For a good two years, I wasn't allowed to audition for things," Berkley told the outlet. "The hardest part was being literally locked out of something I loved so much."

These days, Berkley, 53, is enjoying a career renaissance. After reprising her "Saved by the Bell" role of Jessie Spano in the show's Peacock reboot in 2020, the actress starred in the 2024 body horror "Shell" alongside Kate Hudson and Leanne Suter.
Berkley has also guest appeared in the "Karate Kid" spin-off series "Cobra Kai" and the Kim Kardashian-starring legal drama "All's Fair."
"I've had some obstacles, but I've never given up," Berkley said. "And a lot of dreams have come true — with a lot more to come."
