Creating Hal & Harper was something of a dream come true for Cooper Raiff, who wrote, directed and stars in the series alongside Lili Reinhart. But getting to work with the love of his life while doing it was the cherry on top.

The 28-year-old filmmaker, who previously helmed 2022's Cha Cha Real Smooth starring Dakota Johnson, tugs at every heartstring in Hal & Harper, which follows the eponymous siblings (played by Raiff and Reinhart, 29) as they struggle to untangle themselves from each other in adulthood after a tumultuous childhood being raised by their dad (Mark Ruffalo).

Addison Timlin, Raiff's girlfriend in real life, also stars in the series as Reinhart's coworker-slash-love interest, and he tells PEOPLE that she is who comes to mind when asked if there's anyone in his life that he feels as close to as Hal and Harper do in the show.

"Yeah, I have a person, Addison, who's in the show, who plays Audrey. She's my person who I could spend every waking second with," Raiff says of his Timlin, 34, who he feels "very cellularly-linked to."

They previously met before working on the show together, Raiff says, and he reveals that Timlin's character in the show is "very similar to who she is in real life."

Timlin shares daughters Ezer, 7, and Dolores, 4, with ex-husband Jeremy Allen White. She filed for divorce from The Bear star in 2023 after three years of marriage and over a decade together. Her Hal & Harper character is similarly separated from the father of her two kids and struggles with loneliness on the weekends they're with her ex.

In a candid Mother's Day post after she filed for divorce, Timlin opened up about the challenges of life as a single mom and of co-parenting, saying that it was "exhausting," "lonely" and "painful," especially "when something magical happens and you have to tell yourself 'don't forget this' because theres no witness by your side."

"It is so f---ing hard," she admitted, calling co-parenting "not the natural order of things." But she added, "Doing it alone has given me more strength and more empathy and more tears than anything else in my life ever has."

Raiff and Timlin fell in love while making the Mubi series, the latter revealed in an Instagram post celebrating Hal & Harper's premiere at Sundance earlier this year. “Falling in love with the script, its creator and every person who helped bring the show to life has brought me so much joy, transformation and healing and I’m just so grateful,” she wrote in the caption.

The following month, Timlin hard-launched her relationship with Raiff in a post celebrating his birthday, as she said he "saved my life."

"I never met anyone like me until I met you. How gentle and precious to be understood. How earth-shattering and life-affirming to stand next to someone and know they are feeling the same thing," she wrote. "I love to know who you are and to be close to it. Thank you for letting me big and small and messy and anxious, and loving and true. It has saved my life."

Timlin called Raiff "other-worldly and so important" as she concluded the lengthy tribute — which also included a sweet photo of the writer with her daughters — and called him "my ghost."

Raiff returned the favor on Timlin's birthday in June, when he called her "the love of my life" in a sweet Instagram post.

"You are pure goodness, and we’re all so lucky. I didn’t know what hearts were capable of, how brilliant and strong they could be, but now I do. Thank you," he wrote alongside a carousel of photos of Timlin and a few shots that included her daughters. "I love you so hard. Shine big and bright this year."
