Christian Gonzalez and the Patriots have agreed to a contract extension. Here's a look at the details of the agreement.

Christian Gonzalez doesn't typically allow completions – unless that is completing a contract extension with the New England Patriots.

Gonzalez agreed to four-year, $135 million contract extension with the Patriots in the early morning of Tuesday, Sept. 8, according to multiple reports. The deal comes with $102 million guaranteed, per reports.

With the new pact, Gonzalez narrowly passes the Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon to become the highest-paid cornerback in league history. Witherspoon reached a four-year, $132 million extension in August.

The agreement comes less than 48 hours prior to the regular-season opener against the Seahawks, which Gonzalez had not committed to playing in amid the lack of resolution on negotiations.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, however, indicated earlier in the summer that the team planned to write a big check to ensure the star will stick around for the foreseeable future.

"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person," Kraft said to reporters on July 25. "That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL."

Kraft added that the deal would also be the biggest in Patriots history as well.

New England exercised Gonzalez's $18.1 million fifth-year option in April, which extended his contract through the 2027 season.

Gonzalez hasn't been shy about his desires to remain with the organization and reaffirmed that stance when he met with reporters at mandatory minicamp on June 9.

"Of course, I want to be here. I've said this multiple times," Gonzalez told reporters. "I've been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this town. I love this city. So, of course I want to be here."

The former Oregon Duck has become a fixture on the back end of the Patriots defense since arriving on the scene in 2023. After his rookie year was cut short due to injury, Gonzalez returned to form in 2024 and earned a second-team All-Pro selection. He followed that up with a Pro Bowl season in 2025.

Coming off a standpoint performance in the Super Bowl 60 loss, Gonzalez expressed a desire to remain with the team that drafted him.

"This is where I got drafted, and I don't want to be anywhere else," Gonzalez said, via the Boston Herald.
