(NewsNation) — The latest Caitlin Clark controversy is unfolding in the WNBA after the league left its biggest current star off a 30th anniversary poster celebrating its history.

The commemorative graphic, released as part of the league’s anniversary campaign, features 30 players and is available for $29.99 in the WNBA’s online store.

Clark, arguably the most recognizable face in over a decade, perhaps even the most marketable player in its history, was left off the poster.

Current stars included as fans question selection process

Only 30 players were on the poster, with other WNBA legends left off, including Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne.

Some of Clark’s contemporaries were featured: Atlanta’s Angel Reese, Dallas’ Paige Bueckers, Los Angeles’ Kelsey Plum and Indiana teammate Sophie Cunningham are all present on the poster.

Caitlin Clark’s impact on WNBA popularity and growth

Since entering the WNBA amid much fanfare in 2024, Clark has been a two-time All-Star, the league’s single-season record holder for assists, and the fastest player to score 100 3-pointers in a season.

Clark, who is currently sidelined with a back injury, is second in fan voting for this year’s All-Star Game, the league announced Wednesday.

Critics say WNBA missed marketing opportunity

“It is the biggest mystery or the biggest mismanagement of a golden goose I’ve ever seen in sports,” veteran sportcaster Michelle Tafoya said of the WNBA to “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”

“We’ve not seen a player like this. We’ve seen great talent, don’t get me wrong. But Caitlin Clark is unique in the way that Tiger Woods was unique to golf, just drew in a whole new slew of fans.

“She’s got a game that is generational, meaning we just haven’t seen an all-around game like this before,” Tafoya added.

On-court controversy and ongoing scrutiny surrounding Caitlin Clark

Clark has been the subject of more physical attention on the court than most since entering the league and culminating in the WNBA suspending Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas after hitting Clark in the throat in Wednesday night’s matchup.

The Indiana Hawkeye alum was controversially left off Team USA’s 12-woman roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
