Brigitte Bardot faced several health challenges in the months preceding her death at age 91.

On Sunday, Dec. 28, Bardot's animal protection charity — The Brigitte Bardot Foundation — announced her passing via a statement to AFP.

“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation,” the statement read.

The foundation did not share Bardot's cause of death, however, they shared the actress had recently been hospitalized.

Bardot's death follows a series of health scares in the last few months of 2025. In October, she revealed she underwent surgery at Saint-Jean Hospital in Toulon, France — but did not share what it was for. It is currently unknown if her death was related to the surgery.

Shortly after her procedure in October, Bardot took to X to address rumors she had died.

“I don’t know which fool launched this fake news tonight about my disappearance, but rest assured that I’m doing well and have no intention of bowing out. To those who have ears,” she wrote in French.

Bardot was hospitalized again only a month later as she faced what French publications reported at the time as a “serious” health issue.

On Nov. 24, local outlet Nice Matin reported that she was under medical care at the Saint-Jean Hospital once again, and that the hospitalization was tied to the same undisclosed illness she dealt with the month prior.

After this second hospitalization, Bardot once again reassured fans she was doing well via a statement released to her foundation's website on Nov. 30.

“In response to the spread of false information in recent days, Ms Brigitte Bardot would like to remind everyone that she is currently recovering, that she would appreciate it if people would respect her privacy, and invites everyone to calm down,” the statement read after being translated from French. “Ms Bardot wishes to reassure those who are genuinely concerned about her. She sends them this message: ‘I send my love to you all.’”

Bardot first rose to fame as an actress, model, and singer in the 1950s and 60s before leaving her career behind at the age of 39 to become an animal rights activist. She is survived by her husband Bernard d'Ormale and estranged sonNicolas-Jacques Charrier.
