Years before being cast on The Office, Angela Kinsey lied to get an NBC internship after college

She shared that the internships then required submitting a voicemail to a call center

In the interest of speaking to a human being, she told an operator she had been disconnected

Angela Kinsey is sharing the lie she told in order to secure her NBC internship years before she joined the cast of The Office as Angela Martin.

On the Monday, Dec. 22, 2025 episode of the Lay It On With Brad Leone podcast, 54-year-old Kinsey shared how she got an internship after college on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, under band director Max Weinberg.

"I didn't get the internship right away. I didn't know anyone at NBC, I had to move back home...graduated college, moved back in with my parents," she said.

Kinsey added that, at the time, there was a main number for internships at NBC which connected callers to a call center.

"It'd be like, '30Rock, Rockefeller Center.' 'Yea, I wanna talk t someone about internships.' They would transfer you, and you would just get this voicemail," she said. "That's it. You would never get a human and it would say to leave your name and your phone number, and they would call you back. And no one called me back for three months."

So, Kinsey took a creative approach.

"I just one day called and I said, 'I was disconnected. I was talking to someone about an internship.' The woman, the operator, was like, 'Oh, do you mean Nancy?' And I was like, 'Yes, Nancy.'... I lied," she added.

She continued: "And then they transferred me to this woman .... and she said, 'How did you get my number?' And I said, 'I lied.' And then she was like, 'Okay, well, can you be here on Monday for an interview?' And I literally hung up the phone and was like, 'Mom, Dad, I gotta go to New York!'"

The internship would prove somewhat serendipitous as, years later, Kinsey would be cast on a show that aired on the same network:The Office, Greg Daniels' 9-to-5 mockumentary comedy series based on Ricky Gervais' British original, which premiered on March 24, 2005.

The show captured the hijinks and humdrum of working in the bullpen of a Scranton, Pa., paper company, where regional manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) desperately tries to live up to his self-appointed title as "World's Best Boss."

Though it had a rocky debut season, The Office found its footing on season 2 — eventually earning five Emmys and nine Golden Globe nominations. The Peabody Award-winning show also catapulted the careers of Carell, John Krasinski, Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms and more.

Kinsey currently co-hosts theOffice Ladies rewatch podcast alongside Jenna Fischer.
